  • Lesson Readiness

  • When considering a younger child's readiness for lessons, their reading level and ability to focus is critical.  Many high school students enjoy adding music to their busy lives.   Young and old can and should take up the piano for all it's benefits.  Fun, interesting, and well-paced lesson material are keys to success.

My Teaching

Music has always been an important part of my life.  From my youth I have taken every opportunity to spend time on the piano.  And, like yours, my music education continues.  Although I hold degrees in piano performance and sacred music, I continue to learn and grow as a pianist.

There is so much music to learn - it can lead you down a path you never imagined!  Piano was always my first love, but it did lead to a variety of other music experiences:   string bass in 6th grade, orchestras, concert bands, small string and jazz ensembles.  Ensemble and choir experiences as a singer taught me skills needed to direct choirs - in church and schools.  Ensemble experience was a great plus for accompanying vocalists, instrumentalists, and choirs.   Every year I accompany high school students in UIL solo competitions.  I also record accompaniments for student use.

For over 30 years I've taught students the skill of piano playing using a classical methodology and choosing the best materials available (old and new).  I love helping students acquire the skills needed to be involved with music.  My hope is that their love of music broadens and enriches their whole life.

I strive to establish a comfortable but challenging learning pace based on student's inherent abilities and take into account musical interests.  Fundamental skills such as note reading, sight reading, theory, ear-training, techniques of the masters, the playing styles of the different musical time periods, a playing knowledge of chords, and music history will equip them for a life of music.  With these skills one can easily add light jazz, popular and sacred music, as the student prefers.  With two grand pianos in the studio I offer two-piano repertoire as well as concerti.

Students seek my help in choosing and preparing music for special school or church events.  Students perform in Spring and Winter studio recitals plus the annual Summer's End Recital.   Students may participate in festivals and events hosted by the Austin District Music Assn. / Texas Music Teachers Assn.

While in the studio you will probably meet one of my two Pembroke Welsh corgis, Piper.  He greets people at the door and loves to be nearby as students play.  Bigby, his brother, is very shy so you might catch a rare glimpse of him.  Morley, my cat, occasionally comes by the studio to see what's happening.

Those who become musicians express music from their hearts.   Composer Ralph Vaughan Williams said, "The art of music above all the other arts is the expression of the soul of a nation."   May the art of the piano bring beauty to the soul of our nation.

Testimonials

2017 Winter Recital Phoebe Jeremiah_edit

"I want to take a moment to say how happy and grateful we are that you are my son's piano teacher.  You know when to push him and what he's capable of.  We appreciate how devoted and dedicated you are to your students from lessons, to planning and coordinating recitals, to zoom lessons, to handling everything for the festivals and to how kind and patient you are with your students.  We don't say it enough but wanted you to know that we love and appreciate you so much!"

A note from a local high school orchestra director after recording accompaniment tracks for UIL soloists:  "Thank you for taking the time to make this work.  A. (student) played beautifully and the parts fit together perfectly.  thank you so much."

"My son started piano lessons with Mrs. Dolan last year, and we are amazed at how much he has learned in only six months.   She is very patient and clearly has a passion for music and for teaching."

"Mrs. Dolan is an amazing piano teacher.  My daughter surpassed in 9 months what took me 3 years to learn when I was taking piano!"

"Thank you for giving the gift of music to our daughter.  She has found joy, confidence and strength.  You’ve given her more than 30 minutes a week and we are so grateful."

"Your confidence in my son's ability is pulling him forward with his skills just like I'd hoped;  you are the perfect teacher for him!"

"Mrs. Dolan is an awesome instructor! From the time we met, I had a sense of a great teacher student connection.  One of my retirement goals was to invest in a piano and learn to play.  This would be a challenge for sure but Mrs. Dolan has accepted me as a challenge and I am expecting my love for piano music and Mrs. Dolan's teaching skills will fulfill my dream of playing the piano.  The best is yet to come!!!"

"I recommend Mrs. Dolan highly.  I hadn’t played in 65 years and am happy with my progress."
